Building Lean Culture through Value Stream Mapping (VSM)

INTRODUCTION

Due to Global competition and more demand, customers traditional methods of operation don’t work and companies will struggle to survive. Lean is an operational excellence strategy that enables change for the better. Its main objective is, elimination of waste and respect for people.

Lean needs kaizen to help managers to initiate actions that will lead to continuous improvement through team working. Further, it will enable the managers to identify and eliminate waste / non-value adding activities at all levels to improve business competitiveness. Participants will be taught a very important lean tool of value stream mapping.

Keeping this in view, Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers' Association (IMTMA) is organizing a 2 day programme on “Achieving lean through Value Stream Mapping” on 8 - 9 January 2019 at Bangalore.


  • Lean starter and lingo-Why Lean, History, Tools, Philosophy
  • Kaizen -vital for lean (as improved VSM is possible to be implemented only by point kaizens)
  • History of Lean manufacturing and the Need for Change : Evolution of lean, Contributions of Taylor, Gilbert, Ford and Toyoda family and relationship with five principles of lean thinking ,Lean House
  • Waste Identification and Elimination Techniques: Seven Wastes and Tools to address, (Product flow analysis, String diagrams, Cluster analysis, Non value added analysis)
  • Value Stream Mapping: Current state mapping, Lean Metrics, Line balancing, Load leveling
  • A case study of creating a new VSM is shared by a practicing lean expert
  • Overview of Operational excellence models

After undergoing the programme, the participants will be able to –

  • Understand the evolution of LEAN,LEAN PRINCIPLES,LEAN PHILOSOPHY and LEAN LANGUAGE
  • Understand all the steps –value added +non-value added required to take a product or service from raw material to the  customer
  • Get a macro picture of Process
  • Connect Supplier to Customer
  • Clearly identify non-value added at all process steps
  • Incorporate both material flow and information flow in one diagram
  • Generate an existing VALUE STREAM MAP and create an improved future VALUE STREAM MAP with specific shapes and icons
  • Know about various tools to bring in the improvements

This Program will be conducted by B.S. Ajit Kumar who is at present Independent Director of the Board in Menon Pistons and Technical and Mgt consultant to Menon Group. He Retired as AVP of Federal Mogul Goetze(I) Ltd Bangalore and was also  an Adjunct Professor---M.S.Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences(MSRUAS), Bangalore, teaching and guiding PG Students for their Master's degree in Engineering. He has 33 Years in Manufacturing and Management of Auto Component Industry, 10 Years in Teaching M.Sc and M.Tech. Students in Manufacturing Engineering and Management discipline, 12 Years at Board Level as an independent Director and Audit committee chairman. His expertise is in areas of: Japanese Manufacturing Practices like Kaizen, Lean, TPM, Total Quality Management etc.

Prior registration for participation is necessary. Number of participants is limited and will be accepted on ‘First Come First Serve’ basis. A Certificate of participation will be issued to participants.
